Stand on Two Legs
There is a Chinese proverb that says, "He who deliberates fully before taking a step will spend his entire life on one leg."
I found this quote in a recent Yoga Journal newsletter and think it describes perfectly the path that lead me to decide to go to India next month. I have been practicing Yoga on and off for almost ten years but have never been to "the source." I have often talked about going to India to study, but never really felt like I had the time to go and never really did the research on where to study. When I brought it up again in September, Brad challenged me - "when are you going to stop talking about it and go?"
My first reaction was to list all of the reasons I was not ready to go - I was not sure which school/teacher I should study with; I was not sure I should spend the money on the trip at this time; I felt that Brad needed me to help at home while he is busy buliding up his company, etc. etc. the list went on
Brad proceeded to rebutt all of my excuses and encouraged me to stop deliberating endlessly. He pointed out that I had been interested in Ashtanga for some time and that I should not worry about having a stronger practice or knowing all of the answers before I went. Instead, I should go to find the answers to the questions I had been asking.
I went back to the AYRI website that day and read about the program. I printed out the application and got the required passport photos taken before I could change my mind. When we went to the airport a few days later I booked my plane ticket. Luckily I had enough skymiles saved up from all of my business travel, that the flight was free.
Since then I have done a lot more research and I am both nervous and excited about what I have signed up for. More on those thoughts in my next posting.
